Despite not having a pool to swim in, the girls’ swim and dive team stayed positive during their senior night.
On Sunday, August 18th, a record amount of rainfall devastated the outdoor portion of the Wilton YMCA. With the Y being a community hotspot for gym goers, baseball players, swimmers, and many others, this was a huge blow to Wilton.
Included in the 4.2 million dollar damages (according to Good Morning Wilton) is the outdoor pool. Covered by a bubble in the winter, this pool provides a necessary practice space for the Wilton Wahoos and the Wilton High School Warriors.
In addition to having to shift their practices to three mornings a week in the indoor pool, as opposed to two mornings and three afternoons, the Wilton Warriors have been unable to have home meets this season and have been on the road for all of their meets.
Not being able to have their Senior Night meet in their home pool was discouraging for the seniors on the girls’ high school team.
They were on the road at Ridgefield, on October 21st, where they lost to the Tigers. Nevertheless, they felt that they gave their best effort and were in good spirits as the bus pulled up to the Y, where the parents and juniors had organized a celebration in the lobby.
Once they exited the bus, they were greeted by a tunnel of parents and stray Wahoos holding balloons and flowers out to the seniors. This was followed by pizza and spirited speeches by Warriors coach Todd Stevens.
The lobby was decorated with student-made posters for the seniors, who each invited some friends. Some swimmers even expressed excitement that their senior night was a sit-down dinner instead of a short intermission during the meet.
All in all, the change, while originally unwelcome, proved unexpectedly fun.
